"Went to the Sand Bar for I think may have been their first night open to the public upstairs and what an amazing meal we had. We were a large group of friends getting together for our Christmas night out, I had just flown home from the UK and high spirits were the order of the day. The staff serving us were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. I ordered the chilli and garlic prawns crostini and it was the most amazing taste. 2 weeks on I am STILL dreaming of them. Then had the Beef Wellington which was a huge portion so one of our guys shared half of it and thought it was amazing too. Totally recommend this place - fantastic food for a reasonable price in very comfortable surroundings near the sea."

              "The Sandbar" Raises the bar!

The Sandbar may be the finest modern Italian dining experience in the city, reports Ed Finn.

The Sandbar Restaurant in Clontarf is one of those rare places where you actually want to order everything you see on the menu…. It also has a genuine homely feel and you are made welcome by its friendly staff from the moment you arrive…

Myself and a friend recently arrived unannounced to the Sandbar which was full to the brim, after a short wait and a lovely glass of Pinot Grigio, our very friendly waitress showed us to our table.  She also recommended the prawns to start, these were delicious, perfectly cooked and bursting with flavour.   I followed this with the Goujons of Sole which were ocean fresh and had perfect crispy light batter, and then OMG, there was the Tiramisu.   The Italian Manager Monica makes the Tiramisu herself from an old family recipe and it really is worth coming here just for this alone.    The Sandbar is also one of the only restaurants I know that serves an Italian D.O.C.  as its house red and white!   In these recessionary times, that’s pretty impressive in my book!

The indomitable owner, Luciano chats openly and unobtrusively to all his patrons and you can see that the majority of them come here often.  It’s not just the usual waiter’s query of  " Is everything ok for you sir/madam?"    but  more,  "What  did you think of that new dish this evening?… with,( methinks), a genuine interest in the answer!

We retired upstairs to the first floor later where we were entertained by the fantastic bass and piano playing of Gedas and Dave Fleming.  Apparently they have regular live musical evenings here with special guests of some note…..

The Sandbar enjoys a   very special ambiance and vitality.  There is the feeling that you are dropping in on friends and enjoying simply great food which is cooked to perfection.  The food is complimented by excellent wines which display the owners exceptional knowledge of his viniculture and his passion for serving up great food and wines at equally good value.   The Modern Italian food of Dublin appears to have found a new champion.
